Buddha Purnima 2020 Celebration

The name of Mahatma Buddha's childhood was Siddhartha. He is also known as Gautama Buddha. He was born about two and a half thousand years ago in the house of King Shuddhodan of Kapilavastu. His mother's name was Mahamaya. Maharani Mahamaya went to heaven seven days after her birth. Mother's sister Gautami raised the child. The birth of this child fulfilled the desire of Maharaj Shuddhodan to have a son, hence the child was named Siddhartha. The name Gautama was derived from his gotra.

Seeing the birth chart of Siddharth, the Raj astrologer predicted that the child would grow up to be either a Chakravarti king or a great saint after penance. The father was worried to hear about becoming a saint. He made all the arrangements for the fun of the child in the palace. Siddhartha was compassionate and serious in nature from childhood. His tendency did not change even when he was growing up.

Then the father married her to a beautiful girl named Yashodhara. Yashodhara gave birth to a son named Rahul.
But Siddhartha's mind did not stay in the family. Off for a day and excursion. On the way, the patient saw the elderly and the deceased, so that the truth of life was revealed. Thinking that this is the speed of man, he got restless. Then at a night when everyone was sleeping in the palace, Siddhartha woke up secretly and left his wife and children sleeping and went to the forest.

He started harsh penance in the forest. His body became weak due to austerity, but the mind did not get peace. He then opted for a moderate path, leaving behind austerity. Finally, he reached a place called Gaya in Bihar and meditated under a tree. One day he received knowledge. He became 'Buddha' from Siddhartha. The tree became famous as 'Bodhivriksha'.
Buddha attained Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. At Sarnath, he gave the first sermon to the disciples. This sequence of preaching continued for a lifetime. For this, he toured the country.

Once he also went to Kapilavastu where wife Yashodhara gave him as a begging son to Rahul. Gautama attained nirvana at the age of eighty.
Buddha's teachings had a profound impact on the people. Many kings and common citizens became followers of Buddha. His followers were called Buddhists. Buddhism received the shelter of kings like Ashoka, Kanishka and Harsha. These kings spread Buddhism to Sri Lanka, Burma, Sumatra, Java, China, Japan, Tibet etc. countries.

The teachings of Mahatma Buddha were straightforward. He said that the world is full of sorrows. The cause of sorrow is desire or desire. By abandoning desires, a person is released from sorrows. He told people that Samyak-vision, Samyak-bhava, Samyak-speech, Samyak-behavior, Samyak-subsistence, Truth-keeping, Truth-thinking and true meditation eradicate the craving of man and he remains happy. The teachings of Lord Buddha are very relevant even today.
